Jack's Hat Pattern

One of my many cousin's had a beautiful little boy named Jackson April 19th.  When she gave birth to her first child, Carter, I made the hat so tiny he never could wear it.  So, this time I had some organic cotton bought for me by our grandmother, and I was aiming for a hat that could grow with this baby no matter when I get it shipped or what size he was born!  This is what I came up with, and it is only appropriate to name it after him, so I present to you, Jack's Hat:

Materials: 3 oz/103 yards Lion Brand Nature's Choice Organic Cotton (3oz/85g  103yd/94m per skein)  You will not use the entire skein for smaller sizes. Rated a 4 weight yarn but i feel it hooks truer to a bulky 5) OPTIONAL:  You will need one 1.5" - 2" button.  You will use it to allow the band to "button up. OPTIONAL:  You will also need about 20" - 30" of springy or elastic ribbon, yard, cord or something to string through the band, yet that will stay stretchy. Notes: 1) Do not count CH 1 as a ST. 2) Work 1st ST in same ST as CH 1. 3) Always work your Row 1 into the BACK RIDGE of your starting chain. 4) The back ridge is the hump located on the back of the single crochet 5) The SL ST side is the "Top" of the hat. Ending on a Row 2,  <17, 21, 25, 29, 33 ST>  Do not finish off. CH 1, turn, finish off with long tail and whip stitch FLO of Row 32, to BLO of Row 1. Weave In ends.  Thread new piece of yarn, (I Used a stronger piece of cotton for this) , and threaded through every 6th row or so at the top of the hat.  Cinch together to close and finish off weave in end.  I also pull my cinch "as I go".  I do not wait until I have woven into each row because it doesn't always gather evenly and, sometimes the yarn can break if you pull too hard. Bottom Band: Row 1: Join to bottom at seam. CH2, DC in same stitch and around  <32, 36, 40, 44, 48 ST> Row 2: Ch 2, *(FPDC, BPDC), rep from * around <32, 36, 40, 44, 48 ST> Row 3: Ch 2, DO NOT TURN, *(BPDC, FPDC), rep from * around  <32, 36, 40, 44, 48 ST> If making for smaller baby; button basket weave band up and tie springy ribbon inside to tighten, as baby grows let ribbon out and/or remove and unbutton brim if necessary
